Sealing ring material comparison

2021-08-12

A sealing ring is a rubber ring with a circular cross-section. Because its cross-section is O-shaped, it is called an O-ring. It is the most widely used type in hydraulic and pneumatic transmission systems. It is usually called an O-Ring in Taiwanese and Japanese companies.

1. NBR Nitrile Rubber Seal

Suitable for use in media such as petroleum-based hydraulic oil, glycol-based hydraulic oil, diester lubricating oil, gasoline, water, silicone grease, and silicone oil. It is currently the most widely used and lowest-cost rubber seal. Not suitable for polar solvents such as ketones, ozone, nitroalkanes, MEK and chloroform. The general operating temperature range is -40~120 ℃.

2. HNBR Hydrogenated Nitrile Rubber Seal

It has excellent corrosion resistance, tear resistance, and compression set resistance, and good ozone resistance, sunlight resistance, and weather resistance. It has better abrasion resistance than nitrile rubber. Suitable for washing machines, automotive engine systems, and refrigeration systems using the new environmentally friendly refrigerant R134a. It is not recommended for use in alcohol, ester, or aromatic solutions. The general operating temperature range is -40~150 ℃.

3. SIL Silicone Rubber Seal

It has excellent heat resistance, cold resistance, ozone resistance, and atmospheric aging resistance. It has good insulation properties. However, its tensile strength is lower than that of general rubber and it is not oil-resistant. Suitable for household appliances such as electric water heaters, electric irons, and microwave ovens. It is also suitable for various items that come into contact with the human body, such as kettles and water dispensers. It is not recommended for use in most concentrated solvents, oils, concentrated acids, and sodium hydroxide. The general operating temperature range is -55~250 ℃.

4.   VITON Fluoroelastomer Seal

Its high-temperature resistance is superior to silicone rubber, and it has excellent weather resistance, ozone resistance, and chemical resistance, but poor cold resistance. It is resistant to most oils and solvents, especially acids, aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, and animal and vegetable oils. Suitable for diesel engines, fuel systems, and chemical plant sealing requirements. It is not recommended for use in ketones, low-molecular-weight esters, and nitro-containing mixtures. The general operating temperature range is -20~250 ℃.

5.   FLS Fluorosilicone Rubber Seal

Its properties combine the advantages of fluoroelastomer and silicone rubber, and it has good oil resistance, solvent resistance, fuel oil resistance, and high and low temperature resistance. It can resist the corrosion of oxygen-containing compounds, aromatic hydrocarbon-containing solvents, and chlorine-containing solvents. Generally used in aerospace and military applications. The manufacturer of rubber foam rolls does not recommend exposure to ketones and brake fluid. The general operating temperature range is -50~200 ℃.

6.   EPDM Ethylene Propylene Rubber Seal

It has good weather resistance, ozone resistance, water resistance, and chemical resistance. It can be used in alcohols and ketones, and also in high-temperature steam environments. Suitable for bathroom equipment, automotive radiators, and automotive braking systems. It is not recommended for food use or exposure to mineral oil. The general operating temperature range is -55~150 ℃.

7.   CR Chloroprene Rubber Seal

It has particularly good sunlight resistance and weather resistance. It is not afraid of refrigerants such as dichlorodifluoromethane and ammonia, and is resistant to dilute acids and silicone grease lubricating oils, but it has a large expansion rate in mineral oils with low aniline points. It is prone to crystallization and hardening at low temperatures. Suitable for various environments in contact with air, sunlight, and ozone, and various fire-resistant and chemically resistant sealing links. It is not recommended for use in strong acids, nitroalkanes, esters, chloroform, and ketones. The general operating temperature range is -55~120 ℃.

8.   IIR Butyl Rubber Seal

It has particularly good airtightness, good heat resistance, sunlight resistance, and ozone resistance, and good insulation performance; it has good resistance to polar solvents such as alcohols, ketones, and esters, and can be exposed to animal and vegetable oils or oxidizable substances. Suitable for chemical-resistant or vacuum equipment. It is not recommended to use it with petroleum solvents, kerosene, or aromatics. The general operating temperature range is -50~110 ℃.

9.    ACM Acrylic Rubber Seal

It has excellent resistance to oils, good high-temperature resistance, and weather resistance, but slightly lower mechanical strength, compression set, and water resistance. Generally used in automotive transmission systems and power steering systems. Not suitable for hot water, brake fluid, or phosphate esters. The general operating temperature range is -25~170 ℃.

10.   NR Natural Rubber Seal

Rubber products have good wear resistance, elasticity, tensile strength, and elongation. However, they are prone to aging in air, become sticky when heated, and swell and dissolve in mineral oil or gasoline. They are alkali-resistant but not strong acid-resistant. Suitable for use in liquids containing hydroxide ions such as automotive brake fluid and ethanol. The general operating temperature range is -20~100 ℃.

11.   PU Polyurethane Rubber Seal

Polyurethane rubber has very good mechanical properties, and its wear resistance and high-pressure resistance are far superior to other rubbers. Its aging resistance, ozone resistance, and oil resistance are also quite good, but it is prone to hydrolysis at high temperatures. Generally used in high-pressure, wear-resistant sealing links, such as hydraulic cylinders. The general operating temperature range is -45~90 ℃.

12.   Metal Rubber Seal

Made of stainless steel wire, it does not contain any rubber components and has strong usage characteristics. For example: it maintains normal operation in high vacuum, high and low temperature, strong radiation, and various corrosive environments. The seal skin is made of different materials such as stainless steel, copper, and polytetrafluoroethylene depending on the application, and the metal rubber component covered is used as the liner, with high sealing strength, good effect, and reusability. The seal liner is a component made of different metal wire diameters and densities, suitable for different pressure applications. The general operating range is -80~800℃. Because of its high cost, this type of seal is relatively expensive. However, its good performance and wide range of applications have been unanimously recognized.
